The word masticate as defined in a dictionary means to chew. We normally associate masticating with chewing something between our teeth in order to break it down, and masticating juicers work on this same principle. Inside the machine are two hard surfaces which break down the fruit or vegetables placed into it to help extract the juice from them.
The more conventional type of juicer used by people and widely available is the centrifugal type. These types of juicers don't use grinding or chewing actions but instead use a shredding disc that turns at high speed into order to process the fruit and vegetables. As the disc spins the centrifugal force within the machine is what separates the extracted juice from the pulp and then releases it into a container. Certainly using the word release is a good way of describing how juice is extracted when a centrifugal juicer is used.
To release the liquid content of the plant cells the juice will be spun out of the pulp. One of the main features of the centrifugal juicers is that it allows you to quickly and easily get fresh juice but if you want to get the most nutritional value from your juice drinks then a masticating juicer is the better option for you.
With a masticating juicer because they grind and chew the fibres of the plants between two hard surfaces at far slower speeds they actually get more of the goodness out of them. As well as the juice tasting much more flavoursome the nutritional value of the juice is much higher as well. Instead of the juice being spun out of the fruit and vegetables it is squeezed. Certainly anyone who is using fruit and vegetable juice in a nutrition based therapy program will have suggested to them that they use a masticating juicer.
You will find that there are three different types of masticating juicers available. But all use the same principles of chewing and grinding what is placed in them between two surfaces.
1. A Single Cutter - The Champion is classified as such a masticating juicer. It has stainless steel teeth which are embedded in a cylindrical cutter that shred and chew the fruit and vegetables that are being juiced against the sides of sleeve (made from stainless steel) and the juice will then be squeezed through a screen at the bottom. As well as the juice being full of nutrients and tasting great the Champion is quick and convenient to use.
2. A Single Auger Masticating Juicer - This one is fitted with an auger or screw placed inside a conical shaped stainless steel sieve. As the food is crushed and ground inside it pushes against the sieve and so the juice is squeezed out of it. A great model to consider purchasing of this type of masticating juicer is the L'Equip Omni juicer. This particular one is suitable if you intend to juice a lot of greens, leafy vegetables or wheatgrass.
3. Twin Gear Masticating Juicer - A great version of this particular type of juicer is The Green Power Kempo, which provides the highest amount of good quality juice. To extract the juice the produce is forced through a tiny gap between two cylindrical stainless steel gears that rotate a low speed. In fact these kinds of juicers are the kinds that most keen health enthusiasts, raw fooders and anyone wanting to combat ill health will use.
It does not matter what type of masticating juicer you use, they all get more of the goodness out of the produce you are juicing. Plus they can be used for other food processing functions such as creating sauces, nut butters or frozen fruit desserts.
They may seem a little expensive, but a good quality masticating juicer will cost about the same as a good quality machine for making great tasting coffee. Although the better models tend to cost around £179 you could spend as much or more than £400 on these.
